Since the 4th ulto. all the usual postal facilities have been practically suspended and we have been unable to write you anything definite on the more pressing points which arose, and are still arising, from this sudden and unprecedented calamity -truly a disgrace to our present-day civilisation, putting us back to the Middle Ages.
What a pity that more common sense has not prevailed. The only (though poor) consolation is perhaps that war had to come one day and that the air is cleared at last. We do hope that it will once for all do away with Prussian militarism, though history may reveal that the Kaiser has been forced to break with England against his personal wishes, having been powerless to stay the hands of his Junkers and military advisers.
